A/C compressors 220 volt single phase

Ok guys all A/C compressors have three electrical terminals under the little plastic protective cap.
115 volt compressors have 3 terminals
220 volt single phase compressors have 3 terminals
220 volt 3 phase compressors have 3 terminals
480 volt 3 phase compressors have three terminals

Why do we have three terminals for 115 volt and 220 volt single phase compressors when there are only 2 wires to wire with.

You jumped right on that one but let me ask another question of you. What does the start leg have in Common with the Run Leg and the common leg.
