a/c question

Doing an inspection yesterday, and ran into something that i have not seen before. The central a.c. unit was in a bedroom, with just a small accordian type door for access. The return feed was in the laundry room.
Are there any restrictions on the placement of an a.c. unit in a bedroom?

Are you talking about a mini split HVAC? Are you saying that the condensing unit is inside a bedroom?? or the air handler?? Is there a condensing unit outside the house?

Split system, air handler is in bedroom

What makes you suspect this to be an issue?

I have electric heating and we put this in two years ago works great heats the home 90% of the time and ac does a great job .
Mr Slim 23 seer 12,000 btu cooling Cost $3,500;00 Canadian

Just the fact that i have never seen a central a.c. unit in a bedroom before, and was wondering if there is any code preventing it.

Sean,

Nothing that i am aware of code wise would prevent the A/H from being located in a bedroom providing that it is not fuel fired and it meets the electrical requirements for disconnect and clearances etc. With that said the return air cannot be drawn from the laundry room

Sean-
Mini Split wall condensers handle return air within the air handler itself. The room air is continuously circulated through the unit. There is no disconnect and in fact there is no AC (alternating current) supplied to the interior unit. The power to the wall mounted air handler is low voltage and is supplied from the exterior unit. To the best of my knowledge there are no code issues for this type of system anywhere in the country. Keep in mind that there are many hotels and motels that use multi-headed versions of these kind of systems, one compressor and many wall mounted air handlers in different rooms.

There are codes related to sealing of ductwork that require clearances of 2" or more. If the ducts are too close to surfaces there may be condensation issues resulting in other problems. If it is inside a bedroom closet it needs overflow protection installed a photo would help.

Thanks lads.

Nicest thing anyone called me all day.

Though my day was wonderful, I watched my HS JV first base grand daughter outrun the throw after two of her bunts and then surprise the opposition with an in-the-park homerun and then if it just couldn’t get better and shouldn’t be possible, she sent one over the centerfield fence in the last inning. And all this while maintaining a GPA of 4.3. This is a gal who is not going to follow her grandpa in the construction biz, that’s for sure.
