Fellow Inspectors,

Do Arc Rault breakers typicaly make a slight buzzing sound? I had 3 in a new panel yesterday and they all were making a small amount of noise.

This is what I have come up with:

Some buzzing is considered normal when using an AFI breaker however it is more common when they are installed with solar power and non-sinusoidal current waveforms. It will not cause any problems with the operation of the breaker or the system.

Here is more information about AFCI's

I’ve only found AFCI breakers in two houses so far, and all of them were buzzing. I discussed the AFCI breakers with my Clients and told them that I was unfamiliar with whether or not they should buzz but that I would find out what I could about them. Didn’t find anything.

Forget AFCI, no Square D breaker should ever ‘hum’.

I have only seen three Square D breakers that were bad.

1) a 60 amp A/C breaker 'hummed' before it tripped. The c-750 was to tight.(1993)

2) the breaker would NOT turn back on. A good thing.(2003)

3) a humming breaker. Last week on a 1 year old home. This was deferred to the originsl EC. I do not know the reason yet.(2004)
