I know for sure ASHI NORTH (OAHI/CAHPI) does as I have read some of the letters that they have sent to members who use the NACHI name or the letters CHI on there web site . One member was fined by OAHI for doing that .
Easy to see why NACHI is growing well in Canada and OAHI/CAHPI is stagnet.
Been there saw how OAHI operates and joined NACHI . The best move I made in the Inspection industry .

Nick, sorry for critizing your opinion of ASHI. It is very difficult for me to listen to constant criticism of other associations. The local NAHI and ASHI chapters near my home are comprised of wonderful good hearted people that would give up an inspection to help out a new guy. For many of you who only know NACHI, you probably don’t understand what it’s like to be at peace with all three associations. It’s a great feeling IMO.

In many other places, Erol, ASHI is a covert organization that hides things…even from its own members…in order to further the agenda of a few folks at the top.

In St. Louis, the ASHI chapter opposes licensing. It’s president does not. He, along with two other ASHI members, formed an association called MAHI that pretends to be a “coalition” of home inspectors from all associations. When ASHI members inquire about this, the president of the chapter lies to them and tells them he does not support licensing…actually, that he opposes licensing…then meets with legislators as the president of MAHI to help them write the bill.

Since only 30 members of the 130 member chapter supported his “coalition”, he had ASHI chapters in Columbia, MO and Kansas City, MO pass a resolution at their local meetings (with a relatively small attendance) that ALL members of their chapters would automatically and mandatorily become members of MAHI. This produced a large list of “members” to a “coalition” that actually went against the will of his membership.

At ASHI meetings in St. Louis, most matters are kept quiet at the meetings since several members of that chapter are also NACHI members and the president does not want to disclose anything that they might pass on.

Newbies at the chapter complain of being left out of everything and find it to be a closed society…happy to take their dues, but not willing to do anything else to help them be successful.

Yes, there are some good folks that belong to ASHI and I know a few of them…and like them. This does not change the fact that the association, and its leadership, are covertly working against the will of its members to advance themselves and their own private business interests.

I agree with 99.999 % of your post. I must admit that ASHI is like a business venture seeking profits to pay it’s big staff. I alway thought that NACHI offers the biggest bang for the buck. My tirades are a by-product of high school partying. :ack!:

Licensing and all the evils associated with it tend to bring out the worst in both people and associations, wonder what we’ll disagree about once all 52 states adopt home inspection licensing?

I have been scouring the web and different States agendas for a little while now and I can see a few States were the Realtors are trying to take control of our proffession and to be honest I do not see them having much problem in doing so.

HI licensing is not the real problem, the real problem is who is in control of said licensing. If it is to be Realtors and there cohorts we are gona have a very real problem.:twisted:

If it is the State with a board comprised of HI’s and lawmakers (no Realtors) than we may have the upper hand .

My point is, and I think I have said this before, that the big Org’s and all HI’s need to get together and stop this crap, and we can, if we all pull together and stop acting like a bunch of pre madonas ie. MY Org’s better than your Org. and work together to prevent this insanity.

I do see a problem though, I have noticed ASHI is pulling a full out campaing that is dirrectly related to Realtors, and it pisses me off that they would stoop to such a level!! How in the heck are we ever going to free ourselves from these folks when we have one of the most powerfull HI Org’s sidding with them?

I feel ashamed for all Home inspectors as this is just nut’s!

If NACHI and ASHI got together on these things within1-2 years we would not have to deal with the $49 dollar inspector nor would we have need for Realtor refurals.

Here it is in a nutshell. There are about 35,000 inspectors in the US, loosely affiliated with EIGHTEEN organizations, and those are generally stabbing each other in the back. :roll:

The National Association of Realtors has 1,357,000 dues-paying members with state chapters in lock step.

Legislatively, we are meat on the table. EVERYWHERE.

I must say you are right the farking Realtors take us for granted and use us as pawns in a lot of cases. I have my own workload down to about 8 Realtors that I like and really try there best for the client. The only othr HI’s I take nowdays are refurrals from those agents or past clients.

WE can stop this insane grip that Realtors have over us. I say even the folks that do not market to them are in the most part still relieant upon them for there biz, A web site will only do so much.

If we, as a proffession, would join forces to eradicate this crap I would bet that most HI’s could raise there prices by 50% and not have to argue about it. Then the best of the best will shine through.

New story , slightly related.

I was at a termite inspection 2 days ago (20 min.) and the client told me that he paid $210 for his HI. HMMM, It was 2400 sq and a 2 story with a F’ing pool! I asked him if he was happy with his HI and he told me I don’t know it has been 2 days and I have not received the report. I took the time to point out some obvious problems.

He asked me what I would have charged and I told him $429.00 he actually gasped at my price.:smiley:

The very next day this same person called my office to set up a HI. It was a 5600 sq home (his own house) for a listing inspection. I had to call my friend for the elevator. lol. I found 53 problems of those 6 were in need of serious help. Serious to me is Safety problems and they had a hoot full.

The guy was shocked as he had had regular maintanence, ect.

It is kind of a stupid story , but my point is that you have no idea what you might run into and it is best to be prepared ie. Elevator techs, Indoorpool specialist, Master Sparkeys. Etc.

Through it’s branding program catered toward winning the referral market from real estate salesmen, our friends at ASHI have adapted to become the pilot fish that swim around the mouth of the shark —dependent…not independent. They promote ASHI inspectors so often because they know that ASHI inspector is “realtor friendly” and they can trust his cooperation in working toward closing the sale.

Real estate salespeople think they have inspectors on the short leash, since so many newbies (and a few old timers) live or die by their referrals. Here in Missouri, the MAR is still stinging and trying to figure out what to do with me — a very vocal and well published critic who could give a s h i t about referrals from them.

It’s time for those of us who are free from the chains to stand up against their efforts to govern us and start repealing some of these laws. The conflict of interest that many of them create is very easy to prove to the public and the response of the public is very strongly in favor of the home inspector’s desire to remain independent from real estate salepeople’s direct control.

It is unreasonable to expect or to even ask an inspector who needs his referrals to stay alive to participate in the fight…but those of us who can, should.

I disagree. Once the Realtor is out of the equation all will be free to market to the consumer and not the Realtor for there biz. It is imparitive that all HI’s have a web site, as a very large portion of folks looking for HI’s look to the web for the info they need.
With a nice web site and good direct marketing to your local home buyers, that effectively puts the Realtors out of the loop.:smiley:

I think this is why in Illinois it could be a good thing. There are 7 members on the board…5 must be activly engaged and currently licensed as home inspectors…1 is a real estate licensed broker…and 1 is a member that interest represents the general public. This has put a change in real estate agents recommending “there” inspector. Evev though I’m new in the inspection business…I have been involved in buying and sellind houses for more than 25 years. There are different types of agents , just like there are different types of people.
