Duplex? Single Family?
Down here, we used to (until the Florida Building Code went into effect) have to separate the attics in single family into less than 3,000 sf areas with draft stopping walls, like that.
You are in the old Standard Building Code area, and dwellings were exempt, as they are now in the Florida Building Code.
If a duplex, that was probably a fire wall at one time.
To describe below the wall:
In relation to the wall pictured, the bathroom is to the left (shower stall and bathtub butt up against "the wall", to the right- there is a gas fireplace about 10 feet over
This framing/drywall was only one section, of one side of a wall. There is a gas fireplace to the right(and below) of the picture about 10'. The gas tank is located in the front of the house (also to the right of the picture) if that makes any sense
