Depends.


Was it a combustion air intake for the furnace room, or was it an exhaust vent? If it is exhaust, it should vent to the exterior. If it was intake, it would be nice if it extended past the insulation, but it is a passive intake.

Might be the exhaust for the stove hood or the bathroom fan. Turn on each ventilator in the house and see if you get air flow from one of them.


If it is an exhaust it should be vented to the exterior to avoid condensation in the attic that could damage the structue and grease build up if it is from the kitchen.

In reference to the last post if that is lint on the insulation it may be the exhaust from the clothes dryer. This to should be vented to the exterior also for the same reasons.
