Does anyone do home energy audits? Or blower door testing. Try to decide if I should add it as a service,or do it completely separate?or not even mess with it at all. Any feedback about start up cost or if it did or didn’t work out would be appreciated.
Start up costs high > training and equipment. No demand in conjunction with HI. Demand relative to Inflation Reduction Act HOMES rebate section has good potential, but at the moment unknown. I was doing this work starting in 2016 and it was reliable and filled in for slower winter HI work. Died when the Republicans gained federal control (they don’t believe in human caused climate change and non-renewable energy sources as issues of concern). Now it’s once again ramping up through the Inflation Reduction Act, but currently demand is low. Not all clients are "carbon footprint types’. Some simply want to reduce their energy bills. The work is dependent on the political winds. From my personal view of the future relative to climate change, it’s worthwhile and interesting work. PM me if you wish.
The issue with this work is nobody wants it at the same time as an inspection. They NEED it just before replacing a failed furnace or whatever, but then it’s an emergency.
So your market tends to be the few people that are on top of the issue, outside of an emergency.
Lots of good information, thank you.
Thanks I appreciate all the information
Yeah, back when there were tax credits I heard more talk about it but that’s all but disappeared. Even at the peak I don’t think anyone was getting rich.
In 23 years, one, just one, realtor who was building a house in the Republic of Boulder called to see if I did blower door tests because Boulder was requiring it for the CO. I’ve never had a request from a single client. Unrelated, but I’ve never had a request to test for EMF either.
26+ years and no BD tests either, although I do get an EMF request every couple of years… all of which have been directly from Doctors… as part of their research to determine the root/contributing causes of…
We looked into offering it when I worked for a Htg & Clg company. Before purchasing equipment, we did a bit of research. People only wanted the service if it was free or if they received a rebate from the utility provider.
When I went to work for a GC contractor a few years later, we offered blown in insulation. Almost every customer was not interested having the service done unless they were eligible for a rebate from the utility company.
There is an ethanol plant and bio-diesel plant about 2 miles from my house. The ethanol plant is having a hard go of it and the bio-diesel plant changed ownership a few years ago when the grants ran out.
While car shopping a while back, every salesman made sure to spend a lot of time talking about the tax credits for purchasing an electric vehicle.
What all this tells me is that most people are only interested in energy efficiency and lowering their carbon blueprint as long as someone else is paying for it. If you live in an area where someone other than the homeowner will pay for the testing, than it may work.
