Boiler Fill Valve

I have a couple questions about the automatic fill valve on hot water boilers, do you guys operate the manual fill on these valves and would opening the valve tell me that that “automatic” function will work?

Opening the valve manually will only tell you that the manual feature works. You will be putting more water in the boiler then may not be needed.

The other problem that may occur, is that sediment may get stuck in the seat of the valve and cause an increase in the boiler pressure and if not noticed will cause the relief to open at 30 psi.

I would note the operating pressure at the time of the inspection. Normally 12 to 18 psi.

The automatic feature of the valve is factory set. To test the automatic feature, drain down the boiler and see if it refills and stops at the proper pressure. I would not test it, automatically or manually. Just note the pressure and call for further inspection by HVAC co.
