Burn Marks in the attic around furnace flue pipe

You just need to tell them there is a problem, no more

This.

What pipe is this servicing? You said furnace, but looks more like a wood stove? Oil burner?

If that were my pipe, I’d yank it out and figure out a shorter path to the outside and flip over to a better double walled pipe. Holy cow was that close to torching their home. Having purchased that double walled pipe in stainless before, it’s hideously expensive, but better than the alternative.

As Jean Paul and Mark said report this anomaly.

And, if that is single wall pipe, it doesn’t belong in an attic.

Looks like a double wall to me, but it looks like the bargain version. I think either way though, the pipe needs changed and re-routed. They’d be better off coming straight down from the roof and intersecting the pipe once with less of an angle than what they did there.

In my opinion, that is not the problem. A straight run doesn’t hurt but it will make little difference. There is a catastrophic failure in that system somewhere.

If you suspect a blockage, did you get on the roof and look? The cap comes off pretty easy.

No doubt, something clogged up the pipe and the heat stacked up just prior to the final elbow before exit.

That said, a straight run up to that flow interruption would maybe not have occurred if there was no where for a catch. It may have just affected flow at the burner and triggered a call for service.

I used to do boilers and we often had to re-pipe convoluted monkey bars of piping. It makes a big difference. Straight, short, smallest quantity elbows as possible, I never ran into a pipe that caused this kind of damage on anything but a wood burner though.

I. The inspector is not required to determine:

  1. the cause or reason of any condition.

There was a fire in the attic.

There appeared to be heat/fire damage in the attic on the decking and truss materials, also, the vent pipe had evidence of heat/fire damage. It is recommended that a qualified contractor make corrections as needed.
