Certification Requirements

Hi…I’m looking to get into the business of home inspection, and I am looking for an accurate list of certification requirements.

Do I need to attend a certain number of training hours or can I acquire my own materials and take the exam?

Once I am certified (and become a memeber of the national organization), can I proceed to start my own business?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Jessica

Hi and welcome Jessica

They are several ways it could be done. A lot has to do with which state your in. Some states you have more requirements than others.

Jessica,

In this business you never stop learning. You could start by taking the NACHI online examination. You don't have to be a member to take the test.

It would be good experience for you since it would test you knowledge on what a home inspector should know. The test will also give you an idea of what area's of study are appropriate so you can study more about what you don't know.

I for one learned everything first hand, by doing. You will have to seek the advice of others if you are looking for a school. I know a few inspectors in this area like to sign up for courses in our local votech schools since the cost is fairly reasonable and the teachers usually used to work in that related field.

Jessica:

Welcome to NACHI.

We have a Pennsylvania section of the website at: http://www.nachi.org/faq.htm#EfP

Nick

PS Two PA Chapters recently formed on diagonal ends of the state:

And depending where you are in PA the NY or MD Chapters may be an option.
