CO Alarms Mandatory in State of ILL

Just one more thing to possibly add to your checklist.

Illinois Public Act 094-0741
Illinois residents and HVAC companies and service techs that perform work in Illinois be advised that House Bill 5284 requiring the installation of carbon monoxide alarms was signed by Governor Rod R. Blagojevich and goes into effect January 1, 2007.

Full text of the law is viewable at http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/publicacts/94/PDF/094-0741.pdf
Many will decry that the law does not go far enough and others will decry the intrusion of government into our lives. So be it.

I always recommend that my clients buy the plug-in types for bedrooms.

They are soon becoming mandatory in Minnesota as well.

**Minnesota

**What’s the new law?
Effective January 1, 2007 all newly-constructed, single-family homes and multi-family dwelling units for which building permits were issued on or after January 1, 2007 shall be provided with approved carbon monoxide alarms.

Effective August 1, 2008, all existing single-family homes shall be equipped with
approved carbon monoxide alarms. Effective August 1, 2009 all other multi-family dwelling units shall be provided with approved CO alarms.

All carbon monoxide alarms must be certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory that conforms to the latest Underwriters Laboratories (U/L) standards
(also known as UL2034 Standards).

Just a little info on Carbon Monoxide

Just talked with a manager at a local hardware store. She said they have a huge shipment of detectors on the way and are gearing up for a surge in sales.
