Commercial Property Inspection Field Training Recap - Chicago Bar-Restaurant Oct. 2025

This week’s field training in Chicago took students inside a bar and restaurant with multi-family units above for a full-day inspection experience.

CCPIA® members joined instructor Rob Claus for a full day of inspecting a mixed-use property. The day was spent walking the property, observing building systems, and inspecting an operating commercial kitchen.

A unique aspect of this field training was that the building had experienced a fire several years ago. As part of the research portion (Section 5 of the ComSOP), students reviewed the fire incident report before beginning the on-site inspection, providing an opportunity to connect pre-inspection research with real-world findings.

Inspectors from across the U.S. participated in the class, including those from California, Maryland, Texas, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, and Illinois. Many will also be joining us in Phoenix this November for our field training at a 12-story office building.

This was a great group. For some, this was their first CCPIA class they had attended. This class featured all of these elements you would find in a neighborhood bar and grill, plus being in the historic city of Chicago, a few older systems that they might only encounter in a training book. Our goal was to have everyone leave confident and ready to perform an inspection on this type of commercial property.
