Counterflashing / Chimney Step Flashing

Confirming that house wrap is acceptable as a counterflashing material when placed over step-flashing on a chimney with stucco or siding? Thanks!

Yes, it is acceptable.

Counter flashing would be needed if the step flashing was attached to the face of the cladding.

Here is a detail image which is similar.

Morning, Jon.
I would not promote that.
Just saying.

WRB allows water vapor, moisture, from inside of a home or building to escape, while preventing moisture buildup and designed to protect the building’s structural sheathing. WRB is primarily used to create a drainage plane behind siding, while metal flashings are primarily used to direct water away from vulnerable areas like chimneys, windows and doors.

Perhaps clarity is necessary. All WRB must be covered with the cladding for UV protection. But layering the WRB over step flashing (or any other flashing) is satisfactory and counter flashing not needed.

Let’s take a peek at James Hardie.
