I can’t believe the builder did this. I talked to the neighbor who said his was in the same place and he fell through and broke two ribs. Look at both pictures for the full effect.

Yes, the cover for the crawlspace is the step from the garage to the kitchen. It is heavy enough that, I THINK, it would not slide out from under you as you step on it. My best recommendation is to put a hinge on it with a pulley system to raise the cover up and block the kitchen door while the cover is open.
