Deck construction

I’ve never seen this type of construction technique with the ledgerboard at the deck/structure.


Can someone give some insight as to the effectiveness of this installation.

Hair on the back of my neck always stand up when I see things I’ve never seen before…doesn’t mean it’s not right…it’s just something I haven’t seen.


That said, usually when I have that feeling, I’m usually correct, however it never hurts to get a 2nd opinion.

Kevin, I agree. It’s hard to tell from the pic but is there a ledger for the joist? To me it looks like it may be resting on something.

Those look like blocks between the joists that are attached to the T-111. The joist can then be nailed directly sideways into the block. An acceptable substitute for a lack of joist hangers but not a good way to gain an attachment to the main structure. Good technique but not in this application. As you know, ledger boards should be properly flashed, lag bolted, blah, blah, blah…
