Are we talking about the improper open j-box with exposed 120v wiring and the insulation within 3" of the ceiling mounted light fixture canister? It gets to dark further off to the left. I can’t see anything up there. icon_idea.gif

Yes Exactly!

This was a 10,000 sq. ft monster of a place and it had open junction boxes everywhere I looked, in the attic, cabinets, basement, above ceiling tiles.

This one in the Attic was very concerning though.

Obviously the box should be closed and I have doubts that fixture is rated for insulation contact (Type IC Fixture)

However I do not believe we are looking at bare copper.

Typically the conductors used in EMT are type THHN/THWN which are wrapped with a shinny nylon jacket.

IMO, we are seeing just a reflection of the flash from the camera.

How can we tell whether or not a fixture is rated for insulation contact.

I think those are vertical vents you see on the side of the can to dissipate heat. The thermal canisters I normally see are solid with no vertical vents. icon_idea.gif

ON a IC rated can you will have …well a can over it and a thermal protector either sticking out the side of it like a black cigar ( for lack of a better visual que )…

Most of the time a IC rated cans have metal cans with no vents and Non-IC rated will have vents in the top and no thermal OL.

Every IC can I’ve ever seen has had a label affixed to it that said it was IC rated.

Maybe the stickers fall off. I find non-IC rated cans with and without the 3" insulation warning labels all the time. I also find the full can cover IC rated fixtures without labels. icon_idea.gif
