never actually saw it first hand, sounds like either a Joe-homeowner coverup (didn’t know how to remorter fire brick) or just 'cuz I looks neat man!! in any case I dought any fire in there could come close to the temps that tiles are kilned at, but what about the bonding? what was used to hold the tiles on? mastic? portlan? that’s the deciding factor (besides the fact that you couldn’t actually inspect the fire bricks.
