Gas line does not stop at hot water tank.

First time seeing this and I’m going to call it out.

Looks like someone unscrewed the cap to the sediment trap on the gas water heater and extended the piping to feed a gas fireplace in the living room above.

If there’s not a union close on both sides they’re going to have to cut pipe to replace the water heater.

Yep, that’s what they did. A short cut. Also, they used galvanized fittings. Not compatible with gas.
