Glenn, I appreciate your original question and thoughtful response to some of the replies offered. I learned long ago to post at my own risk and not to expect much from the questions posed in this forum, as there will always be at least one person - and, typically, many more than that - who has nothing better to do than spout their oftentimes unfriendly, unhelpful, unnecessary answer to someone they don’t know and will never likely meet, but is a colleague in the same field. Of course, this has become true throughout social media and I expect it will only get worse. That said, there are many inspectors who do provide incredibly helpful answers to the questions posed and are in this career to assist their clients to the best of their ability and also to those in the inspection community who wish to do the same. Kudos to those of you who look to improve the knowledge and understanding of the entire group. As for your question, my approach is to advise my clients to have a sediment trap installed on the furnace and/or water heater gas lines, between the respective shut off valve and inlet, according to manufacturer and industry guidlines and requirements.
