What are the requirements on a sump being on a GFCI? Would or could the sump trip the GFCI?

There is no exception for sump pumps in unfinished basements and crawl spaces as far as GFI protection goes. See 210.8(A)(4)&(5)
That said most inspectors are lenient as far as sump pumps are concerned if intent is shown. IE: Single receptacles, etc.
Yes, any motor load can cause a nuisance trip. With most newer motors and GFIs this is less of an issue.
