Can you comment on using the standard 3 light circuit analyzer vs using something like Sure Test in these situations?
Do you recommend using the Sure Test on these types of older homes?
I recommend using the SureTest over the three-light tester under all circumstances. The SureTest is much more reliable in giving accurate readings.
The three-light testers do not provide enough information to achieve an accurate analysis of the circuit wiring.
Both the SureTest and the three-light tester will indicate a hot-neutral reverse on a receptacle with an open ground, but only the SureTest can indicate both conditions (when present) on an individual receptacle.
