I was quite surprised not to find any evidence of water intrusion in the attic.

Are you sure the chimney hasn’t moved away from the house,possibly pulling the step flashing with it.
That is what it looks like from the photo.
I was just looking at the pictures and thinking the same

I hate when I see silicon outside.
John, sometimes maybe you’re too picky. I mean what more do you want out of the roofer here. He used at least 2 tubes of caulk for cryin out loud. LOL.
There was no evidence of chimney movement, just an extremely poor overall roofing job!
