Grounding Connection?

Hi I inspected a 50 year old home and found the water main in the basement with the electrical panel gounding wire connected to the main piping at the shut off area. The piping is 1/2 inch copper however the copper runs 20 feet from the foundation penetration to the shut off connection above gound. Is this considered an electrical safety issue? I think it might be a write up.

If I follow your description you are saying the water line ground is not installed within 5’ of where the water enters the building. If this is the case, current code would require the connection to be within the 5’. Older homes, and yours certainly qualifies, the connections were made at a convenient point on the water line.
