What is this? Mold, fungus, Martians???

This is on the S side of a block/ stucco covered home. The fungus (?) is wet. It travels a good foot up the wall. There is a step crack along the course.

My guess is a fungus that is following the crack as the crack will hold moisture and provide a foot hold. Not sure how far it is into the crack.

Thoughts

Efflorescence maybe? An indicator of moisture behind the stucco.

I believe Mike is correct. I see from your picture the stucco extends below grade. Moisture may have wicked up into the substrate causing it to swell and crack the stucco. Even sprinklers spraying on the stucco can penetrate and damage the substrate.

Hope this helps

Do you think maybe there was a crack, they filled it with caulk, then it moved back, squeezing the caulk out?
