It opened on July 10, 1887.
The porch alone is 660 feet long.
It has 332,500 square feet and 397 rooms.

After you guess, here is how many days it took to build the hotel with 600 workers.

Very cool place! I was in the hotel once when we visited the island. We didn’t stay there, just walked in and gave ourselves a mini-tour. Mackinac Island was a neat place to visit.
I’m going to guess 5 years. ![]()
You couldn’t find 600 workers with that level of skill in the same place these days even if you advertised on the web!
thats quite a story!
My guess was over a year. Hard to believe they did it as quick as they did.
I am with Kevin. Over a year.
It would take me that long to inspect it!
How much does it cost to spend the night at the Grand Hotel in Mackinac Island, Michigan?
Average price weeknight $751
Average price weekend night $1,168
I guess that it took 600 workers about 6 years to build this magnificent hotel
In Michigan they were building that while in the desert southwest, Geronimo surrendered in the summer of 1886.
What a beautiful building… Good one Lon.
I’ll guess it took less then three years.
I still don’t understand why you would need web searching to build a hotel?

Very Good!!! Thank you fo sharing!

That’s amazing it would take them years to build something like that around here and the quality would most likely be in the toilet.
It took tons of planning. The article said that the builder ran three shifts of workers (24/7) and paid double the prevailing wages. All the materials were hauled to the island during the previous winter using hose-drawn sleds over the frozen lake. Obviously, they did not have to wait on building permits or inspections. Seems more feasible with that frame of reference.
Awesome, I was able to stay there for a few days in 80 while opening up the Hyatt Regency Dearborn.
Hey Larry! One of the great spots in the world! I am from Michigan. I used to fly my airplane into the island strip
and a horse drawn cart would pick me up and take me to town. Never stayed at the Grand. Too stuffy for my tastes. Lots of great boutique hotels. Loved going in June for the Lilac Festival. Ten inch diameter lilacs line the street. Scent from heaven! Thanks for sharing!
