The above picture is a pathway from inside a basement to the outside of the building. When the lights in the basement were shut off, daylight could be seen filtering in. Unfortunately, that picture would not come out because there was too much of a contrast from dark to light. The opening appeared to be larger than one inch in diameter, which is more than enough for mice to get into the basement, and then into the rest of the house. Recommended repairing the hole in that location with material which could not be defeated by vermin.

Rodent entry into a home is both a nuisance and dangerous. While direct contact with mice and rats can be dangerous, it is contact with the droppings which can be more insidious because you may not realize you were infected. Rodent urine, saliva and droppings, even when dry, can carry diseases such as hantavirus and salmonellosis. Especially dangerous is the dried urine and droppings can become airborne with vigorous cleaning with a dry cloth or brush, which spreads the infectious material even further. Care must be taken to use gloves and a mask when cleaning up an area contaminated with rodent droppings and urine. The use of a damp cloth treated with soapy water or a bleach solution will reduce the likelihood of airborne contamination.

Possibly due to biting insects being attracted to CO2 and water vapor from the breath of humans nearby. A better approach is to remove any standing stagnate water nearby and possibly building bat houses to attract these mosquito eating helpers.
