The death rate associated with high school football was found to be 2000 times greater that deaths associated with exposure to asbestos in public schools. The findings concluded that the vast majority of asbestos used in the USA was not the carcinogenic form.

I read the article, “Carbon Monoxide Poisoning and Detectors”. In this article it was determined that CO related deaths can be greatly averted by the installation of CO alarms. Ata minimum one such alarm should be installed in every dwelling unit.

This picture is that of a spill switch installed on the double acting barometric damper for a natural gas fired boiler. Its purpose is to shut the boiler down when if flue gas (containing carbon monoxide) is exhausted into the room as opposed to going up the stack. This situation could occur if something were to plug or block the stack such as a nest or a small animal like a racoon.

Removal of moisture from the home is a good step in reducing the likelihood of mold growth in your home. Cooktops should have ventilation hoods vented directly to the outside of the building. These hoods should be used any time moisture is being released during the cooking process. This could be from boiling water, cooking or reducing broths. Bathroom fans should be run any time the tub or shower is being operated. Removal of these sources of water vapor reduces the possibility of condensation on or in walls (depending upon how well the house is sealed).

This playhouse and ground bark for children is presumed to be surface coated with arsenic. This condition poses a hazardous risk of absorption in the skin of children and adults merely by touch contact with the material. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has free arsenic safety information available to parents, homeowners and contractors. A qualified environmental specialist, e.g. licensed Home Inspector is recommended for prompt attention, investigation and/or advise as needed.

Why Air Fresheners Can Trigger Respiratory Problems: Air freshners are very popular. In the home, office and cars. They may smell terrific to some and do an can sometimes cover up odors, they actually can cause serious lung problems, can trigger allergy symptoms, aggravate existing allergies and worsen asthma conditions. The variety that plug in, use heat to transfer the smell (chemicals) into the air we breathe, thus activating some chemicals and causing even more harm to humans and animals in the home.

The indoor quality of our homes effect our health. This is particularly true due to construction advances that have caused our homes to be much more airtight than previous generations. Many contaminates could be reduced or eliminated by changing our habits. The use of chemicals in our home and garages, dirty air filters in the HVAC systems, unmaintained appliances are just but a few of the culprits.

Based on our observations, evidence of water damage (caused by water infiltration) and Mold growth was noted throughout the wood rim joists and sill plates. Water is most likely entering from outside Exterior wall (vinyl or aluminium siding) possibly not watertight or flashing missing or not properly installed.

Molds are usually not a problem indoors, unless mold spores land on a wet or damp spot and begin growing. Molds have the potential to cause health problems. Molds produce allergens (substances that can cause allergic reactions), irritants and, in some cases, potentially toxic substances (mycotoxins).

During a recent inspection I noticed a small area on the basement wall that had a mold like substance attached to it. The foundation wall was sound with no cracks or any signs of moisture. The client was advised to clean the area with bleach and monitor it.

Taking an air sampling for a mold inspection is important for a lot of reasons. Mold spores are not visible to the naked eye. Air samples can be used to gather data about mold spores present. Several different testing methods are available.

Lead paint can potentially be found in homes manufactured prior to 1978. It should be disclosed by the seller of the property to any potential buyer. If not, it is the job of the home inspector to alert the potential buyer to the fact that the home may have paint containing lead.The best way to know for sure is to test the paint. Home centers often carry low cost test kits for this purpose.

Asbestos siding was very popular in the early 1900’s. It was well known to have great fire resistant properties which increased its popularity as a building material. In 1973 the EPA banned its use when it was proven to be a health hazard. Fibers that become airborn when crushed or broken can get caught in the lungs and is known to cause Asbesteosis, and Mesothelioma. Both are cancers caused from exposure to the product.

The radon mitigation system that is installed is operating. The label on the unit says it was installed in 2014 and that the home should be retested every 2 years. There is no schedule showing where the home has been retested. Recommend having home radon tested to insure it is working properly.

The filter on the air return for the HVAC unit is clogged. This restricts the air flow and causes the evaporator coil to drop below freezing and freezes the humidity in the air to the coil. This will cause excess moisture overflowing the coil drain pan. The moisture will damage the furnace below or in the case of a down flow system, it will put moisture into the ducts and home deteriorating indoor air quality.

Getting air samples during an mold inspection is very important. Mold spores are not visible to the naked eye and they are hard to determined what type. Have air samples can help provide evidence of the scope and severity of the mold issue.
