Barron,

Do anyone have some heat pump pic's? Also what site can I go to, to learn more about them. We don't have a lot of them here in Memphis anymore. I know one of my weak points are heat pumps. So can someone help me improve on them?

Briefly, I can offer these items for you to research and understand:

some of this might be beyond the scope of HI’s but is nice to know.

1. how older units perform compared to newer units
2. Puron brand and other newer refrigerants performance and head pressure regulation methods by cycling outdoor fan.
3. Defrost cycle operation and selectable timing features.
4. Thermostat differences and internal programming such as the newer ones that can prevent the heat strips from coming on unless the outside temp is less than the user program selection.
5. variable speed air handlers and how to recognize their control wires being wired the wrong way.
6. Max fuse or max breaker ratings, wire sizes, special circuit breakers that handle surge current.
7. condensate, pans, safety float switches etc.

That’s apicture of self-contained unit. It may not appear in Memphis too frequently. A heat pump system is not much different in appearance than does any other type of furnace with an air conditioning system installed.

It's a forum of HVAC people. It has pictures of bad installs, good installs, suggestions for servicing, and all sorts of HVAC information.

One clue about heat pumps in an area that gets snow is they should be mounted up off the ground so the air can get to the unit in the winter.
