Rather than staying focused on an immediate peace deal to end the war, Trump became fixated with securing mineral rights from Ukraine. Now those minerals no longer belong to them.
While the eyes of the world were fixed on the Middle East and the recent war between Israel and Iran, the Russians launched another major offensive against the embattled Ukrainians. Moscow is jockeying for the best position over Kyiv, anticipating that, sooner or later, the West will be forced to seek a negotiated settlement.
Until Washington and Brussels are prepared to do that, President Vladimir Putin will continue maneuvering his forces into the most fortuitous, strategic positions in Ukraine. And, should the West fail to come to the table in a useful timeline, Moscow will have annexed what it wanted of Ukraine, and the Russians will have won the war regardless.

No surprise to me. The moment Putin crossed the border and Biden’s nearly immediate response that America would not engage American troops nor NATO troops, Putin had won.
Trump’s peace through prosperity approach has no effect on an ideolog like Putin. That too became immediately clear. Fail.
And not seeking a negotiated settlement will cost millions of more lives. And an endless forever war that makes too many politicians happy.
Who has the answer? Do we think Ukraine’s people, given enough drones and missiles can win this? Putin will be happy to leave a stain where Kyiv once was vs not gaining his objective.
