I had this discussion (twist/don’t twist) a while ago and I took some pictures of various brands of splicing devices, made up by the manufacturers instructions, then cut open with a Dremel tool.


I can’t find the pictures so I may have to do it again but basically the spring will completely surround the bundle and hold it together quite well, without the shell.


The soft side ones really seem to work best, with the entire spring wrapped around the wire bundle. Even with the shell off you can’t pull the wires apart pulling them sideways away from each other.


BTW the only ones that actually twist the wire to any large extent, using #12 solid, are the hard side nuts.
