With a crane large enough to do that, why didn’t they just pick it up and OVER the overpass?

Performed an inspection for a Client on Saturday who happened to be a long-time IDOT employee. After the inspection, he asked me where he could get an A/C charger for the Poly Stinger he found on the side of the highway. I gave him some ideas, and he went on to explain to me IDOT’s policy regarding “items and goods” left on the roadside:

The District shop in the vicinity of the abandoned items picks them-up, hangs-on to them for 30 days, and if they're not claimed, it's a "finder's / keepers" arrangement, divided up more or less democratically by the boyz in the District shop.

Think about it...find a couple of nice homes along the highway in South Florida during a 10-year career, you'd have it made in the shade. Low acquisition cost, no property taxes, etc. I'm moving to West Palm, gonna work for FDOT.
