There are 27 technology outlets that each have an RG6 cable, a twisted 4 pair for voice and a 4 pair cat. 5 for data.

I put this in about nine years ago (somewhat ahead of the curve)

I'm ready for you to inspect it, tell me if anything is wrong with it and perhaps be liable for it's continued operation. ![icon_lol.gif](upload://zEgbBCXRskkCTwEux7Bi20ZySza.gif)[/quote]

I'm sorry but I'd have to fail you on sloppy work alone. I would never admit to doing that.

Even though your com closit is at the higher end of the spectrum your point is a valid one.

For the "NORMAL" house I could see where this could be a good thing but If I were inspecting your house and saw that spider web and they wanted me to do a low voltage inspection and I agreed to do it ahead of time before I saw it I would be in for a log day

Hmmm, and your experience in this line of work is what?

If you don't mind me asking.

Oh yea I worked for a class A GC as his lead electrician for 10 years untill I wired the owner on the communications companys house he was so impressed he offered me a job. I worked for him for allmost seven years doind AC DC and tellecom I finally got tired of living in hotels. And now here I am.

All I'm saying is neatness goes a long way with me. AC DC CAT5 RG6 Plumbing framing it just shows that the person took pridein there work.

A few general comments

Yes, I do and have done this type of work. Did it for a living back in Ohio before coming to FL.

Telcordia trained and certified inspector. Also a background with UPS, battery backup and emergency generators. Have done telecom site surveys and inspections.

Here is how I charge - so much per outlet

I will check one phone line jack for free to the telco demark point with a home inspection.

All terminations - splitters - distribution amps must be readily accessible

I check for general condition, workmanship, continuity, shorts, grounds, and grounding.

I will spot check for AC leakage

All test equipment can be gotten at homedepo, radio shack, on-line etc.

Cost under $100

I am putting together a little "how to" paper that I will post.

Trust me it is just wire and less of a problem that electrical.

No warranty or maintenance contracts at this time - did that all ready - not good

Brad, good one. This time, I've decided to be a home inspector. I pretty much ignore low voltage stuff. I have yet to hear anyone talk about a track record making money inspecting low voltage wiring in residential dwellings.

I find it ok as part of the package that I offer. I am very comfortable with telecom and TV Distribution wiring (Not all LV systems are my cup of tea) I see it as a no big deal and it gives me a value added service that the competition does not offer.

An example is a local "bug" inspector that gets $75 per house with the hopes to get a bug contract. He is now doing $250 2000 sq ft home inspection that includes the "Bug" inspection. He has set himself aside from the rest of us and that is business. Everyone knows he can't make it on $75.00 bug inspections. It is just a loss leader to get to spray.

Other areas are checking for structural level and square, IR checking of electrical and HVAC. (BIG $$ for equipment) Mold, Radon etc. etc
I do not offer any of these services but might some day

Some things are somewhat restricted to certain markets - example down here some homes have no heat!!

Regards

Dick

Any FL inspectors out there that can tell me how to join the Fl State NACHI association - like what does it get me?? Who is in charge? What is its mission?? or is it just smoke and mirrors for some personal agenda of some group trying to run with the political ball in our best interest. How is it being funded??

Well???

Bell - are you out there??

Richard,

Good luck to you. Let us know how it works out.

A bug inspector is not a good example. Collecting fees for inspecting for bugs is a money maker with a proven track record. Collecting fees for inspecting low voltage wiring is not. Yet.

Mr Bell

Thank you for your reply

Understand about giving and taking

Got to put as much time in my teleco - TV - inspecting primer as I am "escaping" in these no bottom line threads - sort of fun but I really could be working in other areas

When I used to be the Assistant IT Director for Johns Hopkins University, we would have killed our networking people if they had done cabling like that… All our cables in the closets were custom cut. They were very nice.

My collection of IT and Telecom inspection pixs show some of the very good and very bad -- Too bad they don't have any value for training in the HI profession.

You are right - Not a good example of good cable management

All - Still working on phone and computer wiring ck out white paper

After thinking about this for a couple of weeks, I think I would eventually like to offer some type of testing for “smart homes.” You can get test equipment for network cable at a fairly affordable price. I also have much experience with the touch screens that are getting popular in the high end homes. These will become more and more pupular and start to trickle down to the mid-priced home market, I’m sure. Also, remember that the service would strictly be to test the devices and installed equipment for functionality…leaving any advanced troubleshooting to a speciallized professional.

So...with that said, it is a service I am interested in and qualified to perform. I don't see any immediate demand for it, though.

Richard;

I too have an interest in adding this service to my business. I have about 5 years of low voltage inspection experience with Ranger American, here in Sarasota Bradenton area. I don’t feel that it would be a hard thing to learn for some one with an apptitude for basic electrical wiring. I have inspected everything from basic burglar alarms and fire systems to full house HMIS and A-Bus systems with home theater and surround sound packages, in as high as 10,000 sq.ft. homes, and it is just a matter of doing it one step at a time, till you get it right. I think your idea is an excellent one . Let me know if I can be of any help putting the kit together.eusa_clap.gif eusa_clap.gif
