Infiltration or Exfiltration and why?

The black marks are a very fine black dust that easily wipes off. The left side is towards the interior of the cupboard closet and the door is normally closed. Is the air flowing into the closet thru the hinges or out? I am also puzzled as to why this deposit is there because there is a gap at the bottom of the door of about 1 inch which would seem to be a much more likely path for air flow than thru the tiny gaps in the hinge when the door is closed. I saw no visible openings on the cupboard walls. However, the shelves and floor space were well stocked and I could not see all surfaces.

Looks like metal shavings from the hinge rubbing to me.

I use K-Y.

Or in a pinch, vasoline.

Once, 10W-40.

Graphite tickles too much.

Graphite lube to protect the hinges pins, placed prior to painting the exterior surface of the hinges. A can of air might blow the graphite out of the hinges pin.

I have that stuff on almost every hinge in my 8 year old house. I’m going to say that it’s not the lube, it’s the result of no lube.

The main reason I say this is because I found the same stuff inside the three doors that I have had to replace the knob/latch mechanisms on. The black powdery stuff was all over inside them and all were worn to the point that they no longer functioned. The new hardware (same brand) came with absolutely no lube whatsoever.
