It is important to have the minimal 36" landing pad to a home’s entry door as to provide sound footing. As you can see from the attached picture, the tape measure is set to 36" and the landing far exceeds this measurement in the travel path (depth) and also exceeds the 36" width requirement extending beyond the sides of the door.

As you can see, this picture shows the means of egress to this home. It exceeds the 36 inch requirement for the landing pad. The handrail, although not necessary, also meets requirements. The step down meets the requirements as well.
For my research assignment I read an article on pricing and billing a home inspection. This article was very helpful in helping me come up with a good plan and strategy for how much to charge for my services. Once I get started with my new inspection business, I will revisit this article again.

Just recently went to a friends house and have the shingles on the house had blown off. They were everywhere in the yard and I told him to call a roofing inspector right of way to come out and replace it.
Just read an article on dealing with pests inside the home. On how to deal with animals in a crawlspace or in the attic. But on how to take safe precautions for your safety and the animals safety as well.
This image is of a handrail. As you can see in the photo, it is made of undetermined type wood. First I approached the handrail from the lower end of the stairs. I made sure it was graspable, then I gave it a tough to check for stability and sturdiness. Next, I looked for issues related to distance and how the handrail terminates into the wall. Then I walked up the flight of stairs to ensure continuity in the rail. Lastly, as I got to the top of the stairs I flipped the light switch on to verify illumination.
I would recommend following manufacturer’s installation the instructions for maintenance and service.
The InterNACHI Library of Inspection Articles is an exceptionally helpful resource. One article I found interesting was the one titled Stairway Inspections.
I was shocked to learn that in 2004 over 1,638 people died of step and stairway related issues. I would have also never suspected that this number would be greater than the sum of swimming pool and bathtub related drownings combined.
Loose handrails, cracked or uneven treads, and poor lighting are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to stairway inspections. I would definitely recommend this article to my fellow inspectors and anyone who is interested stairway safety.
This is a compliant egress door. The interior floor is only 3/4" below threshold. The door is 36"wide with landing on both exit and entrance to door. The exterior landing in 36" in the direction of travel and 3/4" depth from threshold.
Emergency Egress Openings:Many fire deaths occur when occupants are asleep. Basements and every sleeping room should have a least one operable egress opening. A bedroom that has a door or or a net square area of 5.7 sq. ft. does not a secondary emergency exist. Many times unfurnished basement are converted to bedrooms with no emergency egress. Home Inspectors should note and report if there exist any sleeping rooms which do not have an emergency egress to the exterior, or if the egrees has been blocked or locked.
This picture of stairs shows a continuous hand rail the full length. Also it has the required spacing of 1 1/2" between the wall. This railing is round with a diameter of 2" which is the max for a circular hand rail.
I looked over escape systems to go with this course. Before this course I didn’t know anything about size requirements of all escape routes and Egress systems. In Oklahoma I will not see many basements, however stair and egress complianence will be a common inspection.
THIS PICTRE IS OF THE EGRESS DOOR OF MY HOME, WHEN I WAS INSPECTING I FIRST NOTICED THE LANDING AT THE TOP AND BOTTOM EXCEEDED THE REQUIREMENTS AND THAT THE RISER WAS ALSO WITHIN CODE.THE SLOPE OF THE BOTTOM LANDING WAS PERFECT.
this essay I decided to talk about the biological pollutants in the home, and I have to admit im a little freaked out by this article. especially about the dust mites. one thing I will be doing is an inspection on my own home and doing the checklist from the article.
This is an exterior egress door, its width and height are in compliance with modern standards of construction. The first defect to be called out would be the threshold top to landing length which exceeds the maximum of 7 and inches as clearly stated in the picture. Also Im not sure and Id like to get some feedback whether is allowed or not for egress doors to swing over the landing. I kind of get that sense from the instructional video that is not allowed but it is still unclear to me. If that would be the case then that is another defect to be called out on my report, as said door is seen in the picture fully opened to the outside of the dwelling.
Deck child safety is a very important point to go over with when making an egress inspection due to children vulnerability. It is paramount that safety is provided at every home but most importantly if said home is occupied with at least one kid. In the egress chapter helped me look at this issue from a different perspective. I have never thought of many possible negative outcomes when regarding a child safety.
One of the problems I have encountered on windows is when a home owner coverts a garage into a bedroom. They often forget about the size and height of the window for it’s safety in the event of a emergency escape
When inspecting a balcony deck it is important not be in a rush and take your time to do the best inspection you can for the safety of your client . In order to find any decays and to check for loose railing, proper height and the spacing between the vertical railing
