Essay Mastering Roof Inspections: Wood Shakes and Shingles, Part 2. This section shows the installation of shingles over space sheathing. I inspected my father’s house and it has asbestos shingles on the exterior. Likely installed in the 1950’s is his guess. It is a 120year old farm house. But under the asbestos is cedar shingles on perlins. I doubt there is a guide to the correct installation of asbestos over cedar shingles. So how do you inspect that? Check for lack of obvious leaks, or deficiencies on the exterior shingles is the best I could do. 60 year old asbestos on top of 120 year old cedar. No advice on remaining life could be given.
I chose a picture of thw two most common wood roof covering, shake and shingle. Shingles usually dont last as long as shakes. Each are installed differently. The best grain for both are edgegrain. Shakes are usually thicker than shingles.
I chose the shakes spaced shingle side view photo. A common installation for wood shake shingles are spaced 1x6 boards. The first 24" should be solid sheathing with ice barrier. The first coarse should be double shingles with an 1-1/2" overlap at the eaves to help protect the fascia.

Hi,
Looking to learn more about shakes before I replace mine.

There are three basic grain exposures for wooden shakes and shingles, edge-grain, flat-grain, and slash-grain. Edge-grain shakes and shingles have tight straight grain and flat-grain shakes and shingles have wide grain and exposed heart wood. Slash-grain shakes and shingles have wavy grain and some exposed heart wood and are the least stable of the three.
Wooden roofing comes in two basic forms, there are shakes or shingles. Shingles are always sawed, always tapered, and are usually thinner than shakes. Shakes can be hand split or sawn, they can be straight or tapered, and are generally thicker than shingles.
Testing.
When conducting inspections on wooden shingle roofs the inspector needs to mindful of the roof structure and condition of the shingles to ensure you do no damage if you walk the roof. Shingles will appear dark in color when there is a increase in moisture or saturation.

The picture I chose is of a split in a wooden shingle caused by hail damage. What this course has taught me is that if you see splitting or cracking in newly installed shingles, it may not be installation or moisture caused, you should always look for indentations at the split to see if it was caused by hail and is not an installation defect.
I chose the article “Styrofoam homes”. It basically says it all in the title, japan has started communities coming out with Styrofoam houses and the benefits to such an od housing material include: no rust, no decay, no termites, earthquake resistant, quick and easy to assemble, and they provide the best insulation cutting your energy bill in half.

A simple trick can both prevent loss of expensive tools and make a good impression on clients/agents. Lay all of your tools out on a nice cloth and outline each. At the beginning of each inspection, lay out the cloth and place each tool in its place. Do this again at the end to make sure you haven’t left any tools behind.
The roof in the photo hasn’t been maintained. The roof is over 30 years old and showing the effects of the neglect. The roof has curling and split shakes over the entire roof. The southern exposure is showing the worse wear. Recommended that the home owner have a licensed professional roofing contractor evaluate the roof.
