Interesting Crawl

Went to my brother-in-laws house out in a rapidly growing area for a barbecue. Older house that was strictly a vacation home, but with the rapidly escalating property values, people live there year round now.

Needless to say, I had to go into the crawl and snoop while no one was watching! ![icon_smile.gif](upload://b6iczyK1ETUUqRUc4PAkX83GF2O.gif) I could have spent a day under there and still not found everything that was bad!

Thought you guys might find some of these shots interesting!

It’s hard to believe that he would think the shims in image #4 would help support the home. icon_eek.gif

Chad,

No. Just cheap.

Unfortunately, neither of them makes much money and it was all they could afford.

If I had been hired to inspect it for a client, I would have ended up pushing right up against the idea that we don't comment on whether a person should buy a house or not. Unfortunately, they already owned it before I ever went under it.

They had an inspection even. I believe he was of the $150 dollar drive-by school of training however.

Sounds like it would be a scary vacation! What does the exterior look like? Are the somewhat nice homes? It somewhat amazes me what you can find under, in, and around high dollar houses.

I don't think the piece of wood the lighter is laying on is notched properly. Recomend replacing that piece with a piece that is not notched. ![icon_lol.gif](upload://zEgbBCXRskkCTwEux7Bi20ZySza.gif)

Peter,

No, they are not nice homes. Small. Cheap. (Well, relatively for the Chicago area anyway.)

But the area is booming so I am sure this is on someones list to be bought/demolished and rebuilt for LOTS more money!

Hi Jeffrey!!!

Whew, from your first post I thought maybe your brother in law's house was in my jurisdiction!!!!!! I'm east of Wonder Lake and we have hundreds and hundreds of old cottages "converted" to year round homes. Some of them are very, very scary!!

Many of the homes have been around since the depression days and handed down to family members who have done lots of "fixing up" or have friends that are "electricians, plumbers, architects" etc.

Well, look on the bright side, your brother in law knows now and has the opportunity to make things right and safer!!!

Great pictures, by the way!!

I like the plumbing pipe with a strap to the cut floor joist! The stack of wood looks like a game of Jinga.
