The fire fighters thought “sealed” meant no ridge vents. But, by the description of the event, I am thinking the attic was “unvented,” otherwise they would have easily witnessed smoke coming from soffit or box vents (other sources of venting). Any way to confirm?

I think you are talking about the same thing.
Looks like vaulted ceilings, which wouldn’t have any venting at all.
Although if that was the case, insulation would probably have blocked smoke from traveling through? (At least for the most part)
