Laying down on side

I came across a functioning furnance that was laying on its side. I stopped at an open house trying to meet real estate agents when the seller/agent gave me a quick tour and I saw this.

How unusual is this and is there modifications that should have been done to this gas forced air furnance?

Not having a picture to go by, I would suppose that you saw a

horizontal furnace - they’re made to be installed that way.

The heat exchanger is still "upright" - with the burners on the bottom,
the flue out the top, etc. The blower is in the back and blows straight
through the exchanger.

Very common in the Cincinnati area and I've installed quite a few
such things over the years.

Common here too. Especially in retrofitted homes where there is not a furnace closet and they install the horizontal furnace in the attic.

Some modern high efficiency furnaces are designed to be used upright or horizontal. The only difference in the set-up is the way the condensate drain is connected.

With a Trane it is an up flow or it can lay on its right side. If you need the supply side to go the opposite way just get a downflow and lay it on its side.

Check the manufacture's instructions to be sure if the installation is correct.
