Length of Rough Grass

Rough grass is longer than fairway grass but are there limitations on it’s length? Would any rough grass be considered too high if you cannot find your ball? As long as you are in bounds and not in a hazard, it should be easy to find your ball in the rough, … correct? There was no 1st cut, just right into the rough.

Lots of us lost balls over the weekend due to high grass in area which it is normally easy to spot the ball from 200 yds. I hear that Augusta cuts the grass twice a day.

Jeff,

Did you buy a book on golf over the weekend.

Your point is well taking. I have lost a golf ball right in front of me before due to the rough grass.

Jeff,

wait until the Open is played here in San Diego at Torrey Pines in 2008. Gary McCord is probably right on in saying that par will win. I think without any more technical advances in equipment (who am I kidding) before 2008 then +1 or +2 might win. I have played there on and off for 17 years and maybe 400-500 rounds if you count a 9 hole run as a “round”. I have seen marshals some years in the Buick tourney with 20 people standing nearby watch a ball get sucked into the rough and no one be able to find it…

just wait and see these guys in 2008… don’t miss the fairway…

The rough will be anywhere from 4-9 inches…

Exactly Gary, easy to lose your balls in high grass. It is one thing to be penalized for not staying in the fairway by having a harder shot but it is worse when you have to take a drop because you cannot find your ball where it is normally found easily on most courses.

Chris B, thanks for your help and the phone conversation.

Jeff,

I know it sucks, I have taken that penalty many times here in Maryland. A lot of courses here don't take full care of their courses esp the rough.

Hi,

Rough grass is actually 3-4", I guess that's why you want
to stay in the fairway!

Good luck and keep your head down

I am a real hacker. I almost broke 100 today but NOOOOOOOOOO, my short game had to suck. On the green in 2 or 3 for 4 & 5 holes and then WHAMMMO, I could not sink a put to save my butt.

The other day just the opposite.

this game is not easy and very humbling. Lots of fun though. Better than committing my life to posting on the messageboard.

Length of rough grass

I'd say about 10-15' tall before it's 'refined'? ![icon_biggrin.gif](upload://iKNGSw3qcRIEmXySa8gItY6Gczg.gif)
