This is what I said in my report, much of the text compliments of InspectVue:

“Wooden components within the foundation crawlspace have an odor and brownish tinge which is similar or identical to wood that has been treated with a preservative known as creosote. Creosote is a possible human carcinogen, or a chemical that is capable of causing cancer. However, we do not have the expertise or the authority to identify or comment on chemical carcinogens, or exposure levels and recommend that if this is a concern to you that you consult with an industrial hygienist. More information may be obtained here: ATSDR - Page Not Found or Temporarily Unavailable”

That statement came installed with Porter Valley Software. As far as I am concerned, you can use it.

Wow that software comes with some good canned comments. AHIT has stuff written by 8 year olds and most of the time when you click on a comment only the first few letters show up. There is not one saved comment worth using.

1960 house. Entire floor system (joists and subfloor) treated with creosote. Would you have concerns about moving your family into it? Is the potential chemical hazard only relevant to skin contact?

I am allergic and would not be happy inspecting that space

Why creosote? Its interior.

Barrier separating the flooring living area?. Adequate ventilation?

SUSPECT: creosote.
Creosote is an exterior wood preoperative. New methods for wood preservation are now being used.
RECOMMEND: Samples be tested.
Individual have been known to have alergic reaction from the product.

What is the remediation for creosote under a house?
Surely it can’t be declared a defective or condemned property.
