Log home inspection coarse

I am taking the Log home inspection coarse.

Hi Norm,

Have fun. There was a lot to learn when I took it way back when.

Log homes are a different animal… Read all you can and get with a more experience log home inspector before doing one. Water as always is typically the log home’s worst enemy. Water entering checking, water entering through exposed ends, wood rots from the inside out, insects and excessive damage in the splash zone within 2 feet of the ground are some of the more common areas to consider. Take a hammer to sound the logs for internal rot and be sure your contract clearly specifies what percentage of the logs you will or will not be testing. This is only the tip of the iceberg. Don’t forget to check with your E&O provider to make sure your covered for log home inspections.

Great advice, Randy.
I’ve built many log homes over the years from scratch and you are right on.

Former log home builder here too. There is much to know. It’s a totally different animal, so educate yourself. You can’t know too much.

Few Log homes in my area, but I think I will take the interNachi course. It sounds interesting!
