Here is a graphic showing loose step flashing when the siding (cedar siding today) was nailed directly to the roof framing without wall sheathing. I have seen this several times. I included a photo from today’s inspection for reference. I recommend adding a backer board in between the vertical 2x4 to keep the step flashing from falling out.

Yeah, that’s always amazing to see they just nailed siding boards directly to framing. Hell, I’ve built better doghouses but I guess that’s just the way things were done. Ironically, I find more water intrusion on newer houses.
