The time when this becomes apparent is when posting replies all you see is the member name, not the Displayed name.
I often like to address people directly in this case the name I see is "jpope" now at this point I know this is Jeff  but others I can not put a first name to the member name.

here is the abridged answer to your question, most of the registered user of this board are members, and are registered with this board when we process the membership application.
they are given a member name based on first initial and last name for example "gbeaumont" and a password, their profile would show their full first and last name also.
some frequent guests such as yourself (and up until last year some members) had registered for the message board seperately and therefore the only record is the member profile that they registered with.
A while back before I became a member I was known around here as "Encoga1" but I asked Chris to change it to reflect my real name when I joined.
