Message Board viruses?

There appears to be message board viruses taking on the entities of actual members and non-members alike. They can usually be observed maliciously attacking the org. and it’s members on a constant basis. The most prevalent of these is known as the Chad Virus. Although it is a low-level virus, it can be quite annoying. The more dangerous viruses are the ones that take form as actual members that can attach itself to more areas of the message board then replicate postings back to it’s source (usually another organization). Hopefully we will soon have an antivirus known as Chad-aware available to eliminate these predators from the board. Please be aware of these viruses and do not open any posts you believe may be infected.

I was thinking of a method to selectively filter messages.

It would be interesting to see the number of filters that are turned on for certain individuals.

It doesn't seem TOO large a project to build a filter console that each member can use...

Hi to all,

Bob, thanks for bringing this important warning to our attention, I have done a little research on this problem, it appears that the Chad virus that you have described is actually a milder version of a very nasty piece of MALWARE known a the IDIOT strain that apparently has been circulating on this message board for some time now.

I have it on good authority that the virus has been originating from a server in Northern PA (I guess that some programmer there has too much time on his/her hands) the worst thing about this virus is that once you get in the system it is a swine to get rid of as it refuses to respond to the normal cure of common sense and rationality protocols. It is a shame that this IDIOT VIRUS has had enough time on our system to mutate into the particularly invidious JR TROJAN I suspect that the only way to be permanently rid of this virus is to completely block the ISP address of the source. Maybe Chris can devise a pop-up blocker that can achieve this.

I have also noticed the re-emergence of late of several bits of SPYWARE, it appears that this type of POP-UP can stay dormant in the system for long periods of time and then start producing POP-Ups occasionally, whilst these are not too dangerous the data that they produce should be treated with care as it has known the be corrupted by the ASHINE VIRUS.

The biggest problem with thee viruses is that they can start to affect the genuine DATAMINERS that frequent this site most of which are quite benign and need to be encouraged unless of course they start to mutate into MALWARE.

I hope that you find this helpful

Regards

Gerry

I thought it was just my hardware and software that were having these problems!
It's comforting to know that others are experiencing some of the same troubling issues.
Now that we know the origin Jerry, hopefully some of these pop-up spywares and malwares will be or have been reduced.

Malware, spyware and trojans are sooooo annoying and such a nasty virus!
Especially when they inhibit useful knowledge exchange!

Thanks for making us aware Bob and Jerry!!

I'll be sure to help spread the word!

First, I have to admit this is funny stuff.

Of course, I'd be remiss if I didn't offer the first ingredient of the anti virus.

Common sense.

The second and final cure for the insidious mal ware is..

Govern the association by democratic conventions. It's hard to find fault with a majority rules scenario.

Gerry, describing me as a "milder" form of the virus cuts me to the quick.

Chad:

There are Organizations that operate this way. I suggest you join one of those if that is what you are looking for.

I’m holding out for a bit to see how this one shapes up.

I've already made a lot of friends here, so this'd be the logical choice if you can manage to turn this from an internet advertisement into a genuine association.

It is getting obvious though that that'll never happen.

I may not be on until after Thanksgiving if my plans go well, so I'd like to take this opportunity to sincerely wish you all a nice holiday.

Joey F.

I'd recommend that you skip the second piece of pie or pretty soon there won't be an attic hatch on earth that you can squeeze through.
Is anyone else enough to remember that TV show with the private eye guy called "Cannon".. what was that guy's name?

I found one picture of him several months ago and posted it in members-only section.

If you find the thread we'll compare with William Conrad above and see if they're one and the same.
