Mike Holmes is an Idiot....

I guess you don’t get it yet. Mike Holmes has made it a practice to continually trash Home Inspectors. after swing his trusty sledgehammer, the next comment is usually “the home inspector shouldn’t have missed this” Mikey tends to forget, we aren’t Superman, we don’t have X-ray vision and we don’t have a production company behind us giving us all the details we need. Our profession is based on Experience, Training and Education, not HGTV and their merry men.

We also don’t get to turn the camera off when we f— up and pretend like it didn’t happen.

I saw the show and did see what they examined and I would have questioned most of what I saw and I was watching TV and also a undisciplined and unstructured residential building inspector.I came to INACHI to structure myself to better cover a inspection the proper way.
I did see the show and agree with his recognition of what he saw with the 5 home inspectors that went before him.
Yes he was allowed to investigate further in an effort to show THE VIEWING PUBLIC what he noticed from the onset of his investigation.
Again FOR THE FANS.’’ THE VIEWING PUBLIC.’’
I HAVE SO MUCH TO LEARN AND I KNOW THAT ‘‘STRUCTURE’’ for one and spelling as many of you laugh for another.
I have determination and a keen scenes because I have caught oversight from inspectors that have been in the business for years and are though to be good but only guessing and aiding real-estate agents sell home with flaws…
BIG TICKET FLAWS.
I still say its for the fans. Not every home is up to code by a mile especial in Canada where the industry has to change. That’s all.
Again I do not watch TV except for 4 hours a week at best.
Thank you for giving me your position and I will give it thought as I do everyone’s. To reflect on my views that can always be improved.

Robert… these so-called “fans” are the same people who hire Home Inspectors.
These so-called “fans” are the same people who hear “Canada’s Most Trusted Contractor” tell them ad nauseum that Home Inspectors are no good, useless, lazy, yet Mikey now has “Holmes Inspection”.
These so-called “fans” are the same people who tune into Mikey at every oppurtunity and take everything he says as gospel.
If Mikey wants to educate people, fine, but not at the expense of everyone else in the world, ie: contractors, Home Inspectors, trades-persons et al.
I am a tradesman. As I have posted many times, I watched Mike once…that was enough for me. I watched his inspection show once…again, that was enough for me.

I am asking out of being inquisitive and learning. Does he do this often.I have seen only one episode of this mans show. I do not have cable and TV is a VERY VERY small part of my life.
That show that I saw was because it was being refereed to by news network and posting when, what channels it will be on, the subject and topic.
I do watch the news and not often ,its the same one sided dribble being viewed by the LEFT OR RIGHT. ITS BEEN BOUGHT AND SOLD AND LOBBIED FOR VIEW. none bias is what I am after.
I do understand what inspectors are seeing. That is not an issue.
Its the view they are taking of the SHOW. Its TV ‘‘make believe’’. FOR THE FANS. He is not there doing code violations reports and tearing down every violation he see’s.
In Canada it is still cowboys and Indians in the industry’s that provide regulations.
I see in the USA a better handle on quality control and that’s why I came to INACHI. better standards of practice. stricture practice and over-site.

I’m learning a lot and every angle to a question should be discussed.
I have looked into your back ground and see some one with great in site and many years of learning under your belt. When you talk I investigate for challenges that I my address. I hope you do not mind me saying it that way but I do for all that I truly think have em-put for learning ,that’s all.
Again thanks for your views I will take a long had look.

Whatever we think - or say - about Mike Holmes, he’s the one laughing all the way to the bank!

You are so right Gilles.
What I see in the show is educating the most vulnerable and the public on the building industry.
Witch ever way it is done ,it allows conversation and from that questions.Plane and simple.
One day hopefully, it will reach a higher level and hopefully start more Q&A about the building industry and residential building inspection industry and from that cross board standards will be set.
It does not matter what ROAD YOU TAKE TO TRAVEL as long as you get there.

I fail to see how you can become so sure Mr. Homes is so great from one show…
Many others including much of the public see it as just what it is a TV Movie

Yes .thank you. That is what I have been saying.(FOR THE FANS) its TV
I have been saying that all along.
Maybe looking at it wrong Roy but any information is good when there is little to none out there for people to discus.
Again I am not saying he is good because I can not. I have stated that fact more than once.
I have or what I am trying to say is that the public will view the program for what it is.
From that hopefully the questions and answers will come. Get the public asking questions.
I think the public in Canada knows little to nothing about building, trades. restoration processes and residential building inspections just to start.
So the show casts a light (how-ever strong or dim) about the subject at hand and they in-turn start the learning process by asking questions.
That has been my point from the start.
Not is he a good contractor. I do not know and do not want to know from watching TV. That is not the man. Its his TV personality.
From a spark comes a flame and from a flame comes fire, heat warmth ability to cook .
He (his show)may be a spark that lights up our industry to advance us further into coast to coast legislation standards of practice, recognition.
He already talks about the need.
Look at George Luck and what and how and where he is trying to drive his ideas.
The magazine. Its part and parcel of the Mike Holmes show.
He casts a big shadow on what we do.
I hope I did not wonder to much Roy.
All I am saying is you hit the nail on the head. Its TV a movie.( for the fans)

Ok, i’ll bite. Firstly I must say I have a great deal of respect for Mr Holmes as his shows on home repair and renovation were good shows and he dealt with cleaning up after sumbag contractors. He did this show as an information and advice show for people who were looking for good contractors in an industry rife with crooked and just plain bad contractors. That was a good thing as he clearly cared about the industry and the people he dealt with.
Just as clearly, his ranting about minimum code and building practices over the several years his shows ran were ignored by the building authorities who design and set building code. They after all are architects, engineers, and hold licenses to attest to the fact they have the skills and knowledge to determine what will and will not work in a given structural circumstance. When Mr Holmes realized he was tilting at windmills and his lack of educational credentials, not his knowledge or abilities, were getting him nowhere in that direction and his show was getting stale he made the decision to jump on the home inspection industry.
I believe there are bad home inspectors, in fact after forty years of construction experience I too have come across evidence of them and I have repaired homes “passed” by them. One in which the furnace cabinet was the only thing supporting the main center beam, the beam had been cut out so the furnace would fit under it. The problem with the show is not that it highlights bad inspections but that it does so in a highly exaggerated manner.
In one show Mike finds in an unfinished area what he immediately announces as asbestos wrap on some pipes over a drywall ceiling. As he is going to do the work and the tv show do the paying he doesn’t recommend a lab test to determine if it is asbestos - just rip it out. Hazmat team destruction and rebuilding to the tune of well over 100, 000 dollars. Looks good on tv and yes the home inspector should have caught it if it was indeed visible on the day of inspection.
However, if asbestos is not an issue if it is not disturbed my recommendation had they been my client would have been to seal the area with a spray foam and or drywall, make a note to the effect do not disturb asbestos pipe lining in place behind sealed area, hang or paste it up, and let it go at that. But that is probably why I won’t be on tv anytime soon. No drama.
Lately Mike has for me stepped over the line though. He has actively endorsed a home inspection company lending his name and reputation to what is simply a call center. Mike Holmes Inspections is nothing more than a call center subbing out inspections to home inspectors willing to put on his uniform and do an inspection for less money. These home inspectors they hire must be failing at their own business to want or have time to work for someone else. I am quite sure they are no more “qualified” than the average home inspector Mike seems to have so much trouble with. I can only wonder if when a client calls in regarding an inspection issue if Mike is “going to make it right”. Certainly that is what the client thinks they are getting, a Holmes trained and approved home inspector that will find everything and if they don’t mike will come running to fix it. I think this one will come right back to bite him in the ***.

Whether you like Mike or not he sure knows how to get great mileage on himself.

So what’s he going to teach these guys about IR…???

Where did it say he was going to teach about IR.
Looks like you did not do your home work … Roy

Don’t understand a bit of sarcasm, Roy?

Why should I be thrilled with your try at sarcasm .

I see you visit NACHI ,you are welcome into our Home and you ridicule NACHI and its members constantly here and on other forums .
I was taught by my mother to show respect when I visit others .
For you to come as a visitor and chastise us I think is extremely poor taste .

Where have I heard that before?? I guess I’ll have to go to the corner again!

BTW, my memory is getting short these days, probably due to age but…isn’t this the same org that threw you, an INACHI “Member of the Year”, out a few years ago …or am I mistaken?

KOOL-AID is a great healer!!

Brian, please, stones are better off unturned sometimes.

Can you please explain why you should come into our home and tell us what to do .
I am sure If I visited you and was to tell you and your family what they are doing wrong .
You would ask me to leave .
No way would I ever visit some one and treat them the way you treat NACHI and its members , Very poor taste .

I agree totally. Please you are in INACHI’S home and be kind to all members.
Its only right.
I might not agree with all I read but I do have respect for ALLLLLLLLLLLLL.

Roy,

Brian A. MacNeish was granted unmoderated access to iNACHI’s forum by its owner; as such, he is welcomed and a respected participant in our family.

Brian A. MacNeish is not afraid to tell it as he sees it, and me say this is good for our family. There should be more like him!

Roy,

Your vision of our industry is being blinded by your past experience and reflected here and on other forums almost daily…

Me say you’ve done your part; sit back, relax, let due course be and enjoy!

Cheers,
