Am I right in reporting that the minimum slope for a shingled roof should be 3 inch rise in 12 in. run ?

I inspected one that was a two year old rebuild from tree damage to a flat roof and it looks like one or two inches max in 12 inch run.

they caulked the joints between shingles in the valleys also.

Also it is spongy in a large area, not just under foot when I walk on it. I weigh 240lbs but first one that felt this bad.

Bruce,

You are absolutely correct.

When I find shingles on a low slope roof, I recommend roll roofing or rubber when shingles are ready for replacement.

That spongy area you were walking on....Did you inspect the underhalf?

Most of the time that spongy area that you think is weak is just thin plywood.

sheathing then regular tab shingles with a consistent bead of tar/cement under each course of shingles.

I don't believe its allowed on 1/12 though. That has to be rolled roofing or tar/gravel or other type membrane.

I could not get into the attic at all on this one for several reasons.

It felt spongy everywhere, like it was the rafters too.
