As a side bar - do you use a multimeter with fused probes for protection?
Virtually every multimeter I have ever seen has an internal fuse.
That really only protects the amp scale anyway. The digitals are virtually impossible to blow up with anything we will see in a home on the other scales. Old analog meters could have the movement damaged on an overvolt and the resistors would fry if you put voltage on the resistance scale.
