NACHI Lending Library Coming Back

Back by popular demand, the new and improved NACHI Lending Library will be opening up on April 1, 2005.

After much debate and many models, we have settled on a procedure that will allow us to run the library in a more effective manner. Over the next month we will be acquiring new sets of Books, CDs, Video Tapes, and DVDs for the library.

The new process will be very simple for getting materials.

1.) A new website will be created that looks almost like an online store. Here you will be able to see all the materials available to borrow. Also you will be able to see their current status and when they are expected back in to the system.

2.) If you wish to borrow something, there will be a shopping cart style checkout. Two things that we are going to do different this time. First is there will be a small charge of $1.00 to $3.00 per order to cover the cost of shipping the item to you, and to cover the cost of shipping the item back to the library. Second, we will be capturing a valid credit card as a deposit on the item.

3.) After you checkout the item, will be shipped to you from the library in a reusable shipping container. After you are done with the item or your time of use has expired, we will ask you to put the item back into container and send it back to the library.

4.) Items will be available for loan for a 45 day period. If the library has not received the item back after 60 days. We will then bill your credit card for the full replacement price of the item.

There are still a few other items being worked out in the long run, but this is our current plan as we see if to bring back the library in its great form.

If anyone has any items that they would like to donate to the library for use please let me know.

Thanks

Can I suggest you charge the credit card for the amount it will cost to REPLACE the item instead of purchase price? A donated item was not purchased and, accordingly, would have no purchase price. A purchased item may end up costing more to replace at some future date. Just a thought.

Is the library open now? What’s the link to get there?

45 days ?? I suggest no more than 20 days unless you plan to have about 50 of each item. Someone could wait for a year to get something from the library. If you can’t finish with it promptly don’t order it.

Steve,

It's close. Just not quite there yet. I'm working on it as hard as I can. Unfortunately other things have taken priority with Gary Johnson and my time.

Bear with us. This will happen. By the way some books have arrived and I am still waiting on others.

I have a feeling that the new library may face future problems on RETURNS.

What happens when a member returns a book through USPS, but the NACHI library never receives it. Snail mail is not perfect.

Will there be some sort of trace records on returned items or maybe even a signature request?

I would hate to be billed for a book that I know I have returned but never arrived at destination.

Projected ETA on this. (Joe H. question)

My projection - Before the end of the year. It's going to take time to get the books, library web page, shipping, and other things set up.

Things I'm waiting on -

Web page for the NACHI Library. (Webmaster, G. Johnson).
Software for check out and return of material. (G. Johnson, webmaster)
Books and other material. (Johnson & Gomicko and others ordering).
Shipping boxes. (Johnson & Bowman looking into).
Shipping methods - (Johnson & Bowman looking into)

Sorry, my hands are tied until all of these things come together. Unfortunately other projects have again bumped this one down in the priority list.

Books I have in my posession:

NFPA 70A - National Electrical Code Requirements for One and Two-Family Dwellings. (1 copy, donated by John Bowman)
NEC 2005. (1 copy, donated by Joe Tedesco)
The Zen of Home Inspections (2 copies donated by author, Michael G. Bryan)

Various Video's donated by Jeff Pope and Greg Bell.

David Valley's concern - We agree and are tossing around ideas and solutions.

USPS will provide shipping supplies free of charge.

All you have to do is ask for it.

Thanks for the update on the library.

Do you think that the link should be removed promoting the library? Its been advertised as a member benefit for a long time and hasn't existed, it's false advertising to potential members.
