Leader in Home Inspection Education Celebrates 20 Years
Training Industry Professionals

**Bound Brook, N.J.; April 4, 2007–**The National Institute of Building Inspectors (NIBI®) is celebrating its 20th year of providing quality educational and training programs for the home inspection industry and related professions. NIBI evolved from training programs developed for the HouseMaster® franchise system, which is recognized as the most experienced home inspection provider with more than 360 franchises throughout the U.S. and Canada.

While continuing its affiliation with HouseMaster, NIBI, a state-approved vocational school, offers training for the entire home inspection profession and has developed an enviable reputation for raising inspection standards and increasing awareness of the need for formal home inspection training.

NIBI Director Joseph Cummins remembers how NIBI evolved. He states, “When I first start working with Ken Austin (HouseMaster’s founder and chairman), there was no formal training available for home inspectors. We felt there was a need for structured training programs for the home inspection industry consisting of an educational component, practical field training, testing and continuing education. Access to quality reference materials and technical support was also needed. So we launched the first home inspector training and ongoing educational program of its kind.”

NIBI’s milestone anniversary coincides with Cummins’ 30th anniversary in the home inspection industry. Shortly after graduating from the Newark College of Engineering, now the New Jersey Institute of Technology, with a degree in civil engineering, Cummins started with HouseMaster as a home inspector, eventually moving into training and operational support for HouseMaster, and is now director for NIBI programs.

As the industry grows, more states and provinces are implementing licensing and continuing education requirements, making NIBI’s programs more relevant than ever. In addition to conventional classroom courses at its fully equipped training center in Bound Brook, N.J., NIBI is one of the first home inspection schools to offer online distance learning programs. NIBI’s classroom courses and online learning modules have been approved by many home inspection associations and home inspector boards for continuing education credits.

In addition, NIBI also offers a Certified Inspectors Program, which requires applicants to complete educational courses and field training work, and also participate in yearly recertification testing. Even in areas where licensing is not required, such training gives inspectors, and the consumers who rely on them, added peace of mind that they are up-to-date on the technical aspects of residential construction and related home inspection issues. “These ongoing learning opportunities help inspectors expand their knowledge, not only benefiting themselves but also their clients, and are a critical part of the future of the home inspection profession,” adds Cummins.
