In my world touching a neutral lug with a bare hand was pretty common and I still do it somewhat today just out of habit.
Roy I also use to place my hand on motors checking for temp but my count was to 15 before calling it good. Today we have better measuring tools;-)
Things sure have improved .

Yes we did check 220 ( Now 240) all the time with our Fingers .
I worked with a Journeyman Electrician who had to lick his fingers to test 550 volt ( now 600 volts) this is Canada where 600 is used all the time in industry .
The only 440 volt we have is in the Auto Plants the rest of the country is 600 volts .,
I started in the trade November 1951, We still had a large part of the country at 25 cycle then.

Nice Guy … I only now have 9 1/2 .
4 years ago I cut the end of my left index finger.
Thanks for the reminder.
Said to the Doctor how stupid I was and he said no way you are still active and doing things .

glad we have the tools now, i remember using a torch to find refrigeration leaks , a match for gas leaks ( new piping) . yep and touch the the wire method too.

I do use my nose as well.
I seem to be sensitive to odors.
Likely why I am such a great cook
